High Salmon Count in Cowichan River

A Fisheries and Oceans report is showing a Chinook Salmon count in the Cowichan river of over 9100. That’s compared to the four year average of 6660, and 12 year average of 4780. It’s the highest escapement number in Cowichan since 2000.
Now that the drought season is over, research into the use of stop logs to add lake storage will continue. Catalyst Crofton Environment Manager Brian Houle says long term resolutions to climate change impacts on the watershed is being coordinated by CVRD, Cowichan Tribes and Catalyst Paper.
Winter conditions will be monitored to allow better insight into what next year will look like with specific focus on the snow pillow.
