BC’s first fully-digital mobile mammography lab will serve rural communities on Vancouver Island.
Health Minister Terry Lake unveiled the specially converted bus on Tuesday.
“This announcement supports government’s Rural Health Strategy to guide access to needed health services and diagnostics when and where British Columbians need them most,” said Lake. “Providing screening mammography in rural and remote communities supports early detection, which is the best defence against cancer.”
The ministry spent 940-thousaned dollars to equip the lab, with additional funding from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Shoppers Drug Mart.
The bus will be sent to places like the Gulf Islands, Tofino, Ucluelet, Port Hardy and Port McNeill, as well as Bella Bella and Bella Coola.
Two more buses are slated for future upgrades to digital equipment.
