Cowichan Green Community eyes land for farm incubator project

Cowichan Green Community is hoping a second chance at getting land for a farm incubator project from North Cowichan will lead to success.

The group is asking the municipality for a small plot under the new “University Village Local Area Plan.”

Executive Director Judy Stafford says even if they can’t use it right away, having land set aside is vital to the project.

“We have looked at several parcels of land. To get the program up and running we need land to start. We have tried applying for a few grants but without land to say this is specifically what we are doing, it’s been difficult.”

Stafford says Council seems supportive but a decision is still some time away.

She says the 1.5 hectares could help as many as six future farmers learn the skills they need to strike on their own as commercial food producers.
