Fuel rebate to offset cost of BC Ferries fare hike

Just as travelers were getting ready to dig deeper for BC Ferries trips, the company has announced a little good news.

Fares are set to rise 3.9 per cent on April 1st, but a 1 per cent fuel rebate will mean the overall impact is 2.9 per cent.

BC Ferries says it’s in a position to offer the rebate because it “hedged” against the price of diesel.

But, Deborah Marshall of BC Ferries says while the 3.9 per cent increase applies over the next 12 months, the fuel rebate might not be in place that long.

Marshall says there’s no way to predict for sure if the lower than anticipated increase will mean more ferry riders over the spring and summer.

BC Ferries also says there will be no increase in the minimum buy-in for Experience Cards, or the cost of assured loading tickets.
