CVRD acquires parts of Old Baldy Mountain for Shawnigan Lake community, tourists

The Cowichan Valley Regional District has purchased a major natural park for residents of Shawnigan Lake and people visiting it.

CVRD area director Sonia Furstenau says over 100 hectares has been acquired on Old Baldy Mountain thanks to a community-led fundraising campaign.

She says there was some logging done in the area in the past and there was talk of resort and housing development, so it’s good to know the mountain’s natural beauty can now be protected.

Furstenau says conserving the land will also help the community protect their watershed.
