Duncan seeks to prohibit marijuana operations in all zones

The Federal Controlled Drugs and Substances Act defines cannabis as a prohibited substance and does not allow for retail sales of the drug, even if the user is authorized.
Despite this, medical marijuana store front dispensaries have been popping in neighbouring jurisdictions, such as Nanaimo, where there where loopholes in zoning bylaws.
That left the enforcement to the RCMP who recently shut down some retail outlets in the “Harbour City”.
The City of Duncan is moving, to hopefully, prevent store front dispensaries from getting established here in the first place.
A public hearing will be held tonight (Mon, Jan 4) in Duncan City Hall beginning at 5:30 to deal with a new zoning bylaw to ensure there are no loopholes.
The proposed bylaw would allow for city officials to deal with marijuana dispensaries if the federal government does move to make them legal.
