Around 1:30 Wednesday morning RCMP in Nanaimo started to get numerous phone calls about lights in the sky over the north end of the city.
A car was dispatched to check it out.
Corporal Jon Stuart says when police arrived near the scene they found a man in the parking lot of the Nanaimo North mall, who had been flying a box kite with LED lights on the tail when the wind came up and broke the line.
Stuart says he was flying the kite as high as ten thousand feet….
Police figure the kite was likely what people had seen flying, then moving erratically in the night sky.
