Inmates getting carpentry skills

Through a partnership with the Write to Read project, local inmates are building custom bookshelves, tables and desks destined for new libraries at First Nations schools throughout the province.

They are doing this work at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre.

Kevin McKinnon, Assistant Deputy Warden, Programs, at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre says it’s a good experience for the inmates….

The first shipment of shelves has gone to a First Nations School near Prince Rupert.

Before the year is out furniture will be shipped to a number of libraries in schools throughout the province including the Chemainus Community School.

The program was established in 2007 by former lieutenant governor Steven Point and B.C. Rotary Clubs.
