Stage is set for spring and summer water restrictions

North Cowichan council has revised some of the watering restrictions imposed on residents during summertime drought conditions.

The new rules would allow homeowners to water their yards and gardens from 7 to 9 in the morning, or from 7 to 9 in the evening.

Another change will see weeper hoses added to the to the municipality s definition of micro-irrigation .

A third amendment to the watering restriction bylaw is the prohibition of washing houses during stage two restrictions, unless the washing of the house is necessary to paint or apply a preservative.

Stage one water restrictions start May 1st in the Municipality.
The CVRD water restrictions also start May 1st.
They only allowing watering between 6 and 8 in the morning or 8 and ten in the evening and only odd or even days depending on the house number.
Hand watering is allowed during those same hours throughout Stage one, two and three restrictions.
Stage one water restrictions begin this Friday for the City of Nanaimo, the Regional District of Nanaimo and all the communities within it.
Lawns can only be watered before 7am or after 7pm.
Deb Churko, engineering technologist with the Regional District of Nanaimo says Stage two restrictions will take effect May 1st and that’s when lawns can only be watered every other day……
Churko says during Stage one or Stage two restrictions pressure washing of sidewalks and driveways is allowed and businesses who offer the service can continue to use their equipment all summer long.
The restrictions are region wide and are the result of a new watering restriction framework that was adopted by the District, the City and 11 other major water service areas in an effort to avoid the confusion created by a multitude of different restrictions that were in place last summer.
People with private wells and those on small water systems are exempt from the framework.
