The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement says patients with COPD are clogging up the system.
The Foundation’s Stephen Samis says the disease is the result, mostly, of smoking….
He says there were 69,000 emergency department visits and 44,000 hospitalizations over the past 5 years to deal with COPD alone.
Samis says care needs to be shifted for the disease from the hospital to the patient’s home and that would save 700 million dollars over 5 years.
