SD68 Board in receipt of survey results

The Nanaimo Ladysmith school district board has the results from a transportation survey in hand.
There were around 1200 participants in the survey and around 740 of them said their children do use the school bus.
When parents were asked if they would support a fee for the service, 737 of them said no.
Over a thousand respondents said the school district should develop some guidelines that would identify specific requirements that would make a student eligible for school district transportation.
In creating those requirements, parents said the highest priority students, after those with special needs, should be those that don’t have access to public transportation.
Safety was also a concern as 580 survey respondents believe transportation should be provided when there are risks for students like wildlife, a lack of sidewalks or streetlights, police incidents, and traffic issues.
District staff have been charged with drafting a Transportation Policy that the Board hopes to have in place by the end of November.
