Next round of Malahat improvements to begin in May

The provincial government has announced the details of the next round of safety improvements slated for the Malahat.

Beginning in May, crews will widen the highway and install 2.3 km of median barrier starting at Shawnigan Lake Road and continuing north to the Malahat Summit.

The work will also include a southbound passing lane and improvements to Whittaker Road and Holker Place intersections.

Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone said these new safety improvements mean more than half of the Malahat will have median barriers, protecting the movement of people and goods.

“”The Malahat is the main transportation corridor on Vancouver Island with more than 22,000 motorists traveling it every day. Improving the safety is a priority for this government.”

Since 2001 the province has invested more than $33-million dollars in upgrades to the Malahat.

Kamloops based Dawson Construction Ltd. has been awarded the $8.3-million contract for the work which expected to wrap up next spring.
