Recesses cancelled Monday

School District 79 will be cancelling recess in seven Cowichan Valley schools effective Monday.

It’s in reaction to the first stage of job action from the union in which teachers across the province have stopped carrying out duties considered administrative.

Letters will be sent today to the parents of children in the affected schools.

Also, Starting Monday, the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District is asking parents of elementary students to pick kids up 15 minutes early if possible.

That’s because recess is being moved to the end of the day.

In the meantime, talks between the two sides in the teachers’ dispute continue next Tuesday.

Chief negotiator for the employers association Peter Cameron says the Union’s been asked to take a serious look at what it will take to move forward.

He claims the province is already offering a package similar to what other unions have settled for.

B-C Teachers Federation President Jim Iker says for a deal to happen the government needs to bring more money to the bargaining table.
