Minor bylaw infractions moved out of the Provincial Court System

The City of Duncan is teaming up with the cities of Nanaimo and Parksville and the District of Tofino to speed up the process related to minor bylaw infractions.

The four communities have agreed to implement a system that takes minor bylaw infractions out of the Provincial Court system and move towards an independent adjudication process.

Karen Robertson, director of corporate services for the City of Duncan says this will save time and money.

Robertson says this stems from 2003 provincial legislation that provides local governments with an alternative approach to processing and resolving minor bylaw infractions. Since that time more than 50 municipalities across the province have adopted the new system.
