The Stz uminus First Nation’s pledge to prohibit boat traffic in their traditional waters has many local fishermen nervous.

But, as Joy Thorkelson United Fisherman and Allied Workers Union representative says, this tension could be avoided if the government would act responsibly.

She points to a recent history in which the DFO didn’t consult properly with West Coast First Nations on the herring industry.  As a result fisherman either had to respect the Local First Nation or fish in the waters at the risk of confrontation.

Thursday was the first day for the commercial prawn fishing season. So far Stz uminus First Nation has not blocked any fishing boats.
