A 50 year old woman has died tubing down the Cowichan River.
The BC Coroners Service says the woman was tubing with others on Saturday afternoon in the area of Marie Canyon when she became separated from her tube and ended up in the fast-flowing river.
RCMP say the female had allegedly passed the “pull out” zone while rafting down the river and entered an area of rough water, where she attempted to make her way to the side and exit the tube. She was unsuccessful and unfortunately became trapped under water. The 33 year old male, who she was tubing with, was able to pull her from the water and began resuscitation attempts until emergency personnel could arrive.
Lake Cowichan Fire Chief Doug Knott says they responeded around 3pm after the woman was pulled from the river.
She was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital, but died in hospital early the next morning.
Knott says that part of the river is not safe for tubers.
The Lake Cowichan RCMP with assistance from the BC Coroners Service continue to investigate the circumstances around this drowning.
