Crowder's derelict vessels bill returns to Parliament

Nanaimo – Cowichan MP Jean Crowder is getting another shot at moving through a Private Members Bill on derelict vessels.

A previous bill has been stalled at first reading since 2011, but on Monday she re-introduced it. Crowder told the House of Commons the existing rules on dealing with derelicts don’t work, because most of them don’t meet the guidelines for action from Transport Canada or the Coast Guard.

The new version of Crowder’s bill makes the same call to amend the Shipping Act by making the Coast Guard the receiver of wrecks – and making it their job to deal with them.

The bill is called C-638 and you can track its progress here.
