Malahat Safety Improvement Project completed ahead of schedule

$15 million later, the Malahat Safety Improvement Project is finished ahead of schedule.
Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone says it’s good news for the 22,000 people who use the highway every day.
It involved widening 2.3 kilometres of Highway 1 from Shawnigan Lake Road to the summit, so a new median barrier could be added. Now more than half the Malahat has a median barrier.
The project also included intersection upgrades, improvements to passing lanes and the addition of some U-turn locations. The Malahat Summit Rest Area has also been re-opened, with extra parking and new lighting.
