Cowichan Tribes want to protect First Nations burial grounds from developers

The Cowichan Tribes are concerned that a situation like the one that happened on Grace Islet could occur somewhere else in the future.

Chief William Seymour says local bands need to meet with the province about the Heritage Act. He says the wording could have to be changed to include First Nations burial grounds under cemetery regulations.

He adds, for now, they are happy to see development halted on the small island off Salt Spring.

Seymour says local First Nations, the province and the Nature Conservancy of Canada, which now owns the land, also had to intervene because of ecological implications.
