Throne Speech kicks off new sitting in Victoria

A new sitting of the Legislature opens today, with a fresh Speech from the Throne.

And political analyst Allan Warnke says a theme we’ve come to expect in Throne Speeches may not be as prominent this time ’round.

Warnke, a retired VIU Poli-Sci prof, says with uncertainty continuing around LNG investment in the province it’s likely the government will continue downplaying that part of their policy.

Warnke also says voters will be paying a lot of attention to NDP Leader John Horgan’s performance – both in criticizing the government and offering alternatives.  And he says recent exchanges between Nanaimo North Cowichan MLA Doug Routley, and Green Andrew Weaver — and the attention they got — are signs of the growing tension between the Greens and the NDP.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong will table his budget a week from today. He’s predicting a slightly bigger than expected surplus.
