Island engineer says earthquake could cripple ferry system

An Island-based engineer says damage to BC Ferries terminals from a big earthquake could cripple the system, leaving Island-Coastal communities cut off from vital supplies.

Ray Hebden says terminals like Horseshoe Bay and Tsawwassen are vulnerable.

Hebden, who specializes in floating berth technology, is saying that’s the way Ferries ought to go.

Deborah Marshall of BC Ferries says the idea is interesting, but not practical right now.

Marshall says if there’s direction from the province or feds to go with floating berths, and a partnership to help pay for them, Ferries would be willing to look at the idea.
