Grace Islet sale closes; Nature Conservancy the new owner

The deal has closed, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada now holds title to Grace Islet off Salt Spring.

The sale ends the controversy over a potential development on the site of a First Nations burial ground.

The province contributed 5.45 million dollars. 850 thousand of it was to cover the cost of the land, the rest was a settlement for the private landowner. The ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations says the 4.6 million settlement takes into account the landowner’s costs over the past two decades and the lost opportunity for future enjoyment of the property.

The Nature Conservancy will now get to work with area First Nations and the Province on remediation and a long-term conservation management plan.
