Lack of snow during winter could impact Cowichan River, other systems

The lack of snow this winter has some worried about what river levels will be like this spring and summer.

Tobi Gardner with River Forecast Centre says it could mean low flows on the mid-island.

Gardner says it’s not uncommon to see very little snow at low and mid-level elevations, but the fact that there’s almost no snowpack at high elevations this year is unusual.

He says spring rains have much more of an influence on mid island streams flows than the snowpack, especially compared to the lower Fraser streams.

Last year the Cowichan River almost ran dry at times, prompting prolonged watering restrictions for Cowichan Valley residents.
