NDP MLAs want Stone to step in and halt April ferry fare increase

The NDP is making another push to get Transportation Minister Todd Stone to step in and cancel the hike in ferry fares set for April.

North Island MLA Claire Trevena and Gary Holman of Saanich North and the Islands mounted a two-pronged attack in the Legislature, saying the government is choking off the economies of coastal communities.

Stone says the NDP is calling for “magical” solutions, and refusing to back plans for exploring alternatives like bridges, LNG powered vessels and cable ferries to bring down costs at BC Ferries.

“What idea do they have beyond this magical notion of bringing ferries back into government or piling a whole bunch more debt on the taxpayers of British Columbia? What ideas do they support?,” he said in Thursday’s Question Period.
