Black Press pulls the plug on News Leader

Black Press is confirming the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial is closed for good.

CEO Rick O’Connor says they served the union notice on Thursday.

A dozen employees, represented by Unifor, had been on strike since December 1st.

O’Connor says, “It became clear the newspaper would not be able to recover from the damage that the work stoppage had caused to the business.”

Since they were on strike, O’Connor says the employees were given pay in lieu of severance, more than the company was required to do under employments standards.

Unifor could not be reached for comment.

Black Press, which recently purchased several papers on the Island, including the Cowichan Valley Citizen, from Glacier Media, also shut down the Oceanside Star and Campbell River Courier Islander two weeks ago and made cuts at the Nanaimo Daily News.
