Former Cowichan Tribes employee wins wrongful dismissal case

A former employee of the Cowichan Tribes has won a lawsuit over her firing.

A BC Supreme Court judge has ordered the First Nation to pay Jennifer George 160-thousand dollars, ruling she was dismissed without cause or reasonable notice in May of 2013

At the time George was associate director of the band’s Lalum’utal’ Smun’eem Child and Family Services agency.

Her firing was triggered, in part, by an incident at a Duncan pub involving the sister of the Cowichan Tribes human resources manager.

The Judge says Cowichan Tribes officials mishandled their investigation, and the results didn’t give them cause to fire George the way they did.
