A big emergency could happen anytime, and like any local government the Municipality of North Cowichan wants to be as ready as possible.
Mayor Jon Lefebure says Council got a bit of a primer about their readiness from the Cowichan Valley Regional District recently. The CVRD coordinates emergency planning.
Lefebure says they went over everything, including the big three risks in this area: fires, floods and earthquakes.
Lefebure says they also went over their roles and responsibilities as elected officials which include things like keeping the public informed, and – in his case – declaring a state of emergency if necessary.
