Ban on importing geoducks from BC lifted by Hong Kong

Hong Kong has lifted a ban on importing geoduck clams from BC.

The ban was implemented at the end of December after PSP, or paralytic shellfish poisoning was found in a live shipment.

Michelle James, the Executive Director of the Underwater Harvesters Association, says it’s good news for the industry, which had been struggling because of the ban.

James says the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is now testing geoducks regularly for PSP.

She says even with the ban lifted, the industry is still facing challenges, because the entire west coast of Vancouver Island is closed due to PSP, or red tide. They’re still fishing in Haida Gwaii and in parts of the Strait of Georgia.
