Coastal Invasive Species Committee encouraging people to use “report a weed” app

Invasive species like Japanese knotweed, scotch broom or zebra mussels are the targets of an increasingly well-organized counter-attack.

On Friday, some of the people behind it were at VIU’s Deep Bay Field Station for the Coastal Invasive Species Committee AGM.

The Coastal ISC includes local governments from the Island and the Sunshine Coast.

Executive Director Rachelle McElroy says the public also has a role to play, by taking advantage of things like the “report-a-weed” app, and letting them know where invasives are popping up.

The ISC was one of several groups to share in $1.7 million in funding from the province this year for the fight against invasive species.
