North Cowichan Council has approved the University Village Local Area Plan.
Mayor Jon Lefebure says Council recently passed a bylaw for the much-debated plan, which will provide people with a guideline on how the area will be developed in the future.
He says some of the key facilities located in the area are the VIU Cowichan Campus, Cowichan Aquatic Centre, Island Savings Centre and library.
Lefebure says he is thrilled to see the plan finally become a reality after years of work and public consultation.
