“Preferred Site” chosen for new Cowichan Valley hospital

It could be years before construction starts, but the Cowichan Valley Regional Hospital District says it’s found the best location for a new hospital.

They’ve signed an agreement to buy three properties in the 67 -hundred block of Bell McKinnon Road, which would put the facility near the intersection of Highway 18 and the Trans Canada.

The Hospital District says the deal comes with one important condition;  North Cowichan has to approve a rezoning to hospital use.

The Hospital District has 22.6 million in reserves set aside for the project, and part of that money will be used to cover the cost of the land.  The actual price has not been disclosed.

But even after that there are some hurdles left to clear, including getting the province on board.  Island Health already has the Cowichan Valley at the top of its priority list for a new hospital.
