Back to school: Reps talk new curriculum; RCMP to watch school zones

It’s back to school Tuesday for most students in our region…and for some in K to 9 they’ll be learning a new curriculum.

Education Minister Mike Bernier says the emphasis is on flexible learning, while making sure core skills like reading, writing and math don’t fall by the wayside.

Teachers had a hand in drafting the curriculum, but they also say the Ministry could be doing more to support the roll-out.

Mike Ball is president of the BCTF local for Nanaimo – Ladysmith.

The curriculum will be in all K to 9 classrooms for the 2016/17 school year.

Meanwhile, RCMP detachments are going to be busy on the first day of school too.

Watching for drivers who may have forgotten how to behave in school and playground zones.

Police also say drivers should be prepared for more traffic, watch for buses and pedestrians. They say you should maybe give yourself a little extra time to get where you’re going.

ICBC is suggesting that parents review the rules of the road with their children and even take them on a dry run along the route to and from school.
