Firefighters tackle house fires in Duncan, Maple Bay

A Thompson Terrace house fire in the Properties at Maple Bay early Wednesday morning could have been much worse if it wasn’t for a local man living in the area.

Aaron Muth says he called 911 around 5:30am after seeing flames. He says he banged on the door of the house and rang the doorbell several times but nobody answered.

Muth says he was told the people living in the house are renters and it appears nobody was home at the time of the blaze.

Meanwhile, the North Cowichan South End Fire Department continues to investigate the cause of a fire on Gibbins Road over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Fire Chief Scott Henning says 16 firefighters were needed to put out a blaze on Sunday morning. He says one person was sent to hospital with mild smoke inhalation and a cat died.
