New Island MP promising a strong voice in Ottawa, despite no government reps

The man who defeated the only Conservative incumbent running on Vancouver Island is promising a strong voice for the region in Ottawa – even though it won’t have any MPs in government, or the official opposition.

Gord Johns will be the rookie NDP MP for Courtenay-Alberni, after coming out ahead of former cabinet minister John Duncan.

The only non-NDP member elected on the Island Monday was Green leader Elizabeth May, and now there’s a movement afoot to try to convince the new prime minister to take her into his cabinet as environment minister, so she can represent Canada at the upcoming UN climate conference in Paris.
