Police are blocking vehicles from getting on Stebbings Road in Shawnigan Lake amid protests against a controversial soil treatment facility in the area.

Cpl. Janelle Shoihet speaks on behalf of the RCMP.

Shoihet says demonstrators can still get on the road but they will have to do so by foot.

Police say nine people were arrested on Tuesday, but none were charged, as hundreds marched to raise awareness about the risks the South Island Aggregates site poses to the local watershed.

Meanwhile, some other Stebbings Road businesses have called the demonstrations an “inconvenience” for their operations.
