North Cowichan is turning to LED lights.

The Municipality’s director of engineering and operations Dave Conway says 650 streetlights will be switched.

He says the project recently got underway as 117 lights were replaced in the Trillium Terrace and Kingsview Road areas.

Conway says the move with save hydro costs and reduce energy usage as LED lights last a lot longer than regular ones.

He says the remaining 533 lights will be installed before the end of the year.

Conway says the project will save about 272 hundred kilowatt hours of electricity per year and around 743 thousand dollars over the next 15 years.
