BC taxpayers are new owners of lot near toxic dump site

Due to a failure to pay property taxes, the property next to the one owned by the company who holds the permit for the contaminated soil dump site at Shawnigan Lake has recently been forfeited to the Crown.
There were heated exchanges at the B.C. Legislature yesterday about the transfer of property.
Opposition Leader John Horgan says now the taxpayers of BC may be on the hook for any remediation at that site and that could cost millions of dollars.
Environment Minister Mary Polak said independent testing of the site has been done and there is no evidence that there is anything to be concerned about downstream with respect to contamination.
