Provincial health emergency declared

At the current rate in 2016, without additional steps to combat overdoses, B.C. could see as many as eight hundred overdose deaths this year.
As a result of the rising fatalities, the provincial health officer has called a public health emergency which will allow regional health authorities to collect personal information from the coroner, emergency rooms and paramedics about those involved in illicit drug use.
Dr. Perry Kendall says that information will be kept confidential and will not be shared with law authorities….
With that personal information, such as age, gender, location of the incident, the type of user involved, Kendall says, health authorities will be better equipped to put interventions in place.
Those might include things like a mobile clinic van or a supervised consumption site.
