CVRD Director for Shawnigan Lake Sonia Furstenau says the Shawnigan community is disappointed with the judge’s decision to allow more soil to be imported to this site while there is so much uncertainty.
Fursternau says the BC Court of Appeal granted a limited stay, which will allow the operator to continue landfilling up to an additional 106 thousand tonnes of contaminated soil.
Furstenau says the ruling is discouraging, but the community will not give up.
With a provincial election a year away, she says protection of drinking water across all communities in BC needs to be a priority.
