“The most beautiful mountains are the clean ones.”
That’s the message Cowichan Secondary students want to share with the community. The Search and Rescue class and the Art class collaborated to install a new sign at the base of Mount Prevost to take action against illegal dumping and littering in the area.
The new sign designed and painted by art students encourages visitors to keep the mountain free of garbage, as Mount Prevost is a common site used for illegal dumping. Students who take part in this program also clean up the area annually. Outdoor Education Teacher Darren Hart with Cowichan Secondary says its been running since 2009.
In 2015, 110 students and staff collected 11 hundred kilograms of farbage and recyclables. A photo of the new sign can be seen on our website.
Mayor Jon Lefebure was on hand at the sign unveiling Thursday and presented the class with a 500 dollar cheque to contribute toward their travel expenses during their clean up trips.
