Cowichan Valley MLA calls New School Funding “Smoke and Mirrors”

The Provincial Government is redirecting some additional funding to school districts across the province. The money is equal to the administrative savings that districts were asked to find.

Minister of Education Mike Bernier says districts will have the flexibility to use the funding to provide services for students.

The Cowichan Valley School District will see better than 348,000 dollars as a result of the redistribution.

NDP MLA for the Cowichan Valley Bill Routley says the government is trying to make up for the fact they did not keep up with inflation costs in the past.

The Cowichan Valley School District had to say goodbye to their adult education program due to budget cuts this year, and Routley says this funding is not enough to repair all the damage across the province’s school districts.
Routley adds that it is especially sad to be seeing schools closed and programs ended during a time where there is a shortage of skilled workers in British Columbia.
