North Cowichan Council dealt with a number of significant issues during a five-hour meeting on Wednesday.
One of these was looking at a proposed zoning bylaw to allow a neighbourhood commercial centre at Berkey’s Corner. Some area residents have been opposed to the development due to the design and having drive-throughs. Mayor Jon Lefebure says council has decided to take a step back and look at some changes to the bylaw.
It is expected staff will report back to council at the next meeting on June 15th.
Another highlight of the meeting…police costs in North Cowichan are expected to see a drastic 9% increase in the new year. Mayor Jon Lefebure says council has limited ability to influence these costs as they are set by the province.
These cost increases are for contract negotiations with local RCMP officers, as well as the growing cost of police training and programs that are run throughout the community.
