Mounties warn about dogs in hot cars

Nanaimo RCMP say they get called out to reports of a dog left in a car 3 or 4 times every day.
A week ago, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were called to two dogs in distress.
It was 30 degrees outside, the owner had left the windows down about 6″, and one of the dogs, with a body temperature at just about 42 degrees, was near death.
Corporal Gary O’Brien says the majority of calls to police about dogs left in cars are often resolved without injury to the animal or without causing damage to the vehicle….
O Brien says before calling police, a concerned citizen should try to find the owner by going to nearby stores and having them paged by the vehicle description and plate number.
The City of Nanaimo has a bylaw where if it is determined the interior temperature of the vehicle has exceeded 23 degrees, the operator of the vehicle could be subject to a 500 dollar fine and their animal could be subject to a 500 dollar fine and their animal could be seized.
