Minimum wage going up 40 cents

It is National Payroll Week and coincidentally, also the same week that marks an increase in BC’s minimum wage.

It’s set to go up Thursday by 40 cents to 10.85 an hour.

Dermod Travis, executive director of Integrity BC says with increases in living expenses in the province are rising faster than inflation and the bump in wages won’t help people keep up…..

Besides increases in average rent, Travis says MSP premiums have gone up more than 31 per cent since 2010, the average B.C. Hydro ratepayer has seen their annual bill rise by 32 per cent and now the average FortisBC customer will pay an extra 82 dollars a year for natural gas.

Travis says, even to get away from it all, a one-way passenger fare on B.C. Ferries between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay has risen more than 25 per cent since 2010.
