Major municipal convention kicks off

The UBCM convention gets going today (Mon) in Victoria.
President of the Union of BC Municipalities, Al Richmond says a highlight for many delegates is the opportunity to talk to provincially elected officials….
The 1200, or so, delegates will talk about marijuana sales and tax sharing opportunities, but also issues surrounding community safety and transportation like bicycle lanes and passenger rail service.
They’ll also talk about environmental issues, like oil spill response and watershed protection among a raft of other issues.
177 resolutions, in all, are on the table for discussion.
CVRD officials will be attending the UBCM convention and looking to bend the ear of a variety of ministers.
They want to meet with the Minister of Health to talk about a Cowichan District Hospital replacement.
Cowichan water storage and soil deposits on forest lands will be topics for the Minister of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.
The issues of rural pedestrian cycling pathways and the Malahat village bypass will be taken up with the Minister of Transportation.
