Municipalities get cash to study amalgamation

A study to look at amalgamating the City of Duncan and the Municipality of North Cowichan is now well out of the starting blocks.
That’s after the municipalities have learned the province will hand over up to one third of the cost of the study, or 47,000 dollars to help fund it.
Jon Lefebure, the Mayor of North Cowichan says one consultant has already been hired to lead a Citizens’ Assembly who will consider all the options….
Beginning in November, 5,000 randomly selected households will receive a letter inviting residents to volunteer to serve on the Assembly.
Lefebure is not sure how many will ultimately be chosen to serve on the Assembly but he’s hoping to have recommendations from that group in 2017.
