Children in care sometimes victims of sexual violence

The Representative for Children and Youth says an alarming number of girls in the care of the provincial government have been the victims of sexual violence while in care.

Cadieux says the report offers some interesting recommendations which will be discussed with partner ministries and agencies in the coming weeks…
The report says between 2011 and 2014 at least 121 children and youth were victims of sexual violence while in government care and one-quarter of the reported incidents were perpetrated by the foster parent.
More than one-third of the sexual violence incidents in care settings were perpetrated by another child or youth in the same placement as the victim.
