Nanaimo council struggles with guard situation, makes a tough decision

Female detainees at the city owned RCMP jail in Nanaimo will no longer be monitored only by female guards.
That’s after city council accepted the recommendation in the Core Services Review to move away from the practice to save 360,000 dollars.
Mike Dietrich is the Manager of Police Support Services for the City of Nanaimo…

Councillor Dianne Brennan was disappointed with the decision saying the issue is one of human dignity and she was proud of the way Nanaimo was dealing with it…..

The move means the elimination of four permanent guard positions, however some of those positions are vacant already.
