Rain threatens First Nation community

Parts of Vancouver Island are expected to be hit by a series of storms early this week.

Nearly 160 millimeters of rain have fallen on Port Alberni so far this month and another 150 to 300 millimeters could fall by the time the storms pass mid week.

At least one road has been washed out, but the highway remains open, for now.

Dozens of volunteers have come from Port Alberni to the Tseshaht First Nation to help with sandbagging.

Nearly 4,000 sandbags have been laid so far but the Somass River continues to swell.

14 homes on the Tseshaht First Nation have been protected but 16 more remain threatened by floodwater.

6 families have been evacuated.
