Recommendations to overhaul child welfare system

A final report from the Ministry of Children and Family
Development’s special advisor provides 85 recommendations to overhaul British Columbia’s Indigenous child welfare system.

That overhaul is expected to improve outcomes for Indigenous children and youth by changing the focus from intervention and separation to strengthening families.

The report, with 85 recommendations, was done by Grand Chief Edward John….

Premier Christy Clark says implementing the recommendations will be costly, but she’s not yet prepared to attach a dollar figure….
Clark says the province is already working on implementing 40 of the recommendations within its control.
Those include committing to developing a plan to recruit and retain Indigenous individuals for social work and working with First Nations and Metis to educate Indigenous people about the child welfare system.
